Pre-enrich food samples prior to the isolation of Salmonella species using Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Buffered Peptone Water (Dehydrated). This non-selective pre-enrichment medium provides optimal conditions for the resuscitation of cells injured by food preservation processes.
Low numbers and/or sub-lethally injured Salmonella spp. cells may be present in test food samples. Pre-enrichment in Buffered Peptone Water allows these cells time to repair and multiply before being introduced into a selective culture, greatly improving recovery chances.

Background & Studies
Edel and Kampelmacher found that pre-enrichment in Buffered Peptone Water at 37°C for 18 hours before selection in Brilliant Green Tetrathionate Bile Broth provided superior recovery of sub-lethally injured salmonellae from contaminated meat.
Sadovski reported that lactose broth, when used as a pre-enrichment medium, caused a rapid drop in pH that harmed freeze-injured salmonellae in frozen vegetables. Buffered Peptone Water maintained a high pH for 24 hours, overcoming the low buffering capacity of vegetable tissue.
