A cell-permeant esterase substrate that can serve as a viability probe. Upon hydrolysis by intracellular esterases, this AM ester also yields carboxyfluorescein. As compared with fluorescein, carboxyfluorescein contains extra negative charges and is therefore better retained in cells.
